Tractor Driving 2022
The Christian County Hight School Agriculture Department collaborated with the Christian County 4-H to host a tractor driving clinic n March 10, 2022 at the Agriculture Expo Center in Hopkinsville. Salesmen from Hutson Inc. and H&R Agri-Power demonstrated to a class of about forty high school students. Safety and practical tractor driving skills were taught by the instructors. The second half of the day allowed participants to put their new knowledge to use by driving the tractor. Using the course set forth by the 4-H state petroleum power tractor driving contest rules for the Kentucky State Fair, students were timed and judged on how well they executed the course. Students who were the most successful were given the opportunity to compete for both FFA and 4-H tractor driving contest later that spring and summer. Though some students found it nerve racking to operate such a large piece of machinery, every student who attended at least drove the tractor around the arena. Many of the students have never been given this opportunity since they live within city limit or have never worked on a farm.
The event not only taught students the importance and knowledge of farm machinery safety but gave a newfound confidence. Christian County High School Agriculture teacher Victoria Mohon was quoted to say, “from the most agriculturally experienced student to those who have never seen a tractor this close, each student was given a chance to succeed to a new personal level of accomplishment today.”
