In October a feeder calf grading demonstration was held at the Livestock Events Center, with producers from three counties participating. Local stockyards provided the calves, and UK livestock specialist and a USDA grader conducted the demonstration. Presenters involved producers in determining frame and muscle scores, as well has how price differences are determined.
Master Finisher program offered online and in-person to producers in Hardin, LaRue, Meade and Grayson Counties. The last two sessions were held in-person at the Hardin County Extension Office with a meal provided. There was a lot of good discussion between producers and Dr. VanValin on various aspects of finishing and marketing cattle.
In mid-March a new program was offered to local cattle producers prior to the breeding season. A Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation (BSE) Clinic was held at the Livestock Events Center. A local veterinarian agreed to participate, and producers could bring their bulls to the facility to be weighed and evaluated. Producers and others were also allowed to view samples collected, so it was a real hands-on and educational event for those that participated. The local cattlemen's association agreed to pay half the cost of the exam for members' bulls. Was disappointed with the turnout, but for the first effort, all involved thought it was a success. That evening Dr. Les Anderson presented a program on beef reproduction and timely tips prior to breeding season as a conclusion to the day's activities.
