Farm-City Day

Author: Douglas Shepherd

Planning Unit: Hardin County CES

Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership - ANR

Plan of Work: Activating Volunteer Leaders through Extension Programs

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Local Farm-City Day event had the planning committee revamped, as well as overall program design.  In prior years, the event was hosted on a rotating basis been Extension (rural segment), and the Chamber of Commerce (urban segment).  Whoever was hosting, planned the event and tours highlighting their segment of the economy.  Since the event was cancelled the previous year due to weather and Covid, the Extension leadership group felt it was a good time to make a change in this 60+ year old event.  Basically instead of having two separate committees, in the future there will be one committee made up of Extension, Chamber and representatives from each of the county's incorporated cities.  Each year the program's tours will highlight both the urban and rural segments.  This year this was actually done by using a tour of the new Extension Office and the Bluegrass Sportsplex.  As an added feature, the Sheriff's department's new drone was demonstrated that the local Farm Bureau donated to them for crime scene use as well as locating lost individuals.  The new Kentucky Office of Ag Policy Executive Director was the featured speaker at the noon luncheon held at the Extension Office with over 200 attending.

Agent also participated in the Louisville-Jefferson County Farm-City Day event held in conjunction with the North American Livestock Exposition. Agent along with Dr. Don Ely, nominated Kim Ragland to receive the Harold Workman Ag Leadership Award that was presented to her at the luncheon.  Agent had received this award in 2018.
