The purpose of the 4-H Cloverbuds is to help young children learn life skills to become competent, caring and contributing citizens. The primary goal of the Cloverbuds program is to promote children's healthy development - mentally, physically, socially and emotionally. That is why the Rockcastle County 4-H Cloverbud Club partnered with the Rockcastle County Animal Shelter to facilitate an educational lesson on pet care. Research has proven that being attached to a pet is related to positive emotional functioning as well as social and cognitive development in children.
During this lesson, the Rockcastle County 4-H Agent, Alyssa Cox, and Rockcastle County Animal Shelter Director discussed basic components of pet care with 12 members of the Rockcastle County 4-H Cloverbud Club. By the end of the lesson, the participants conveyed that they were confident in carrying out pet-care tasks. They also had a good understanding of the purpose of spaying and neutering.
As a result of this program, participants developed an awareness of the responsibilities of owning a pet and an attitude of care and pride regarding pets. They are able to make responsible decisions regarding their pets’ care and act to fulfill their basic needs. They are also aware of the role that the animal shelter plays in our community and know how to refer to them when their services are needed. Two participants had the opportunity to expand their families by adopting animals from the shelter. In addition to the knowledge that they gained from this lesson, they now have a companion to provide social and emotional support.
