Success StoryMaster Hay Maker

Master Hay Maker

Author: Gary Hamilton

Planning Unit: Montgomery County CES

Major Program: Forages

Plan of Work: Production and Economic Challenges Facing Livestock Producers

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In Montgomery County, livestock represent the largest sector of agriculture. Hay is a crucial part of livestock systems in Montgomery County, and while we want to minimize the number of hay feeding days due to cost, producing and feeding high quality hay for those days is crucial.
Livestock producers and past Master Cattlemen participants expressed the need of further their education on hay production to local Extension Agents. In response, the Montgomery, Bath, Menifee and Nicholas County Cooperative Extension Service conducted the Master Haymaker program consisting of five sessions taught by UK Specialist focusing on producing high yielding and high quality hay.
Twenty-five producers participated in the five classroom sessions covering topics ranging from soil fertility, species and variety selection, weed control, storage, and equipment. Survey evaluations revealed that 100% of participants gained knowledge in the areas of soil fertility, species and variety selection, weed control, storage, and equipment. Fifteen of the participants were Montgomery County Farmers.
