Major Program: Active Living and Health Promotions General

Plan of Work: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Mental health issues after a cancer diagnosis are very common and also costly. Proven community-based prevention programs can increase participants’ knowledge and create positive changes in behavior. These programs could save thousands of dollars in health-care costs and even prevent deaths by suicide.

Leslie County Extension, Family and Consumer Sciences presented Taking Care of Mental Health During Cancer to a total of 50 participants. After the program, 49 participants reported that they increased their understanding of how to identify symptoms. Also, 49 reported that they could identify questions to ask their health-care team, while all 50 participants increased their understanding of mental health best practices. All 50 participants also reported that this program met their expectations, was very informative and it was worth their time and effort to attend.

Many participants commented that they had a family member with cancer or had cancer themselves.  They also indicated that they attended our program to have answers to be prepared to help themselves or others in the event of cancer.  Some other shared responses included keeping in touch and talking with loved ones who may be dealing with cancer and need help coping mentally and just being overall more aware of mental health issues in cancer patients. Several shared stories of loved ones who battled cancer and also their own cancer journeys.

Many participants discussed and agreed that Taking care of Mental Health during Cancer can be challenging and stressful when trying to handle both.  They also commented that being more educated through this program and talking about mental health may help survive the journey with more positive outcomes.
