The Johnson County Extension and 4-H Progam Councils identified Life Skill Development as a program priority in the 4 year Plan of Work. A local middle school teacher and a YSC Director reached out for progamming on Life Skills. The County 4-H Agent along with school personnel planned and delivered and 3 part program series over 4 different 9 week school semesters with lessons featuring Etiquette, Time Management and Financial Planning. Over the duration of the school year, the program was presented to 4 sets of different students during their respective 9 week school sessions and over 280 students participated in the 3 part program. In the first session of the series, students learned dining and personal etiquette, and then practiced placing their table setting skills and practiced table etiquette through a mock meal. In the second session, students were given tips and tools to manage their time, eliminate time wasters, organize their spaces, and identify how their time was spent on an average 24 hour day to understand how they might better allocate time. The third and final lesson was a hands-on financial awareness program called Money Habitutudes which helps young people understand why people spend or save money according to their habits and attiudes. As a result of this program, over 280 youth gained knowlwdge in Life Skill Development. In an effort to gauge program results, surveys are being conducted, and the result will be shared in the near future.
