Beef Record Keeping
Author: David Appelman
Planning Unit: Bracken County CES
Major Program: Beef
Plan of Work: Measuring the Agriculture Business
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
One of the most limiting factors affecting beef production in Bracken County is the lack of production data and record keeping. Without this information, many business decisions may or may not be the best choice from farm profitability.
Bracken County producers now have a new tool to use, that addresses the record keeping issue with their beef herds and that is the X10D app and web based system developed at the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. The Bracken County Ag Development Council invested $1000 four years ago to help develop this program and now 20 producers here in the county will have free use of the program. Once they have entered their farm and herd information, entries of data can take place immediately after a task is completed, or takes place and with just a few clicks and less than 1 minute. Producers will now be able to generate reports on production, cost, inventories, sales, yields, and numerous other indicators used to make management decisions. In addition to the record keeping functions of this program, it will also serve as an educational tool with extension, and a communication tool for beef producers.
