Grain Safety

Planning Unit: Hart County CES

Major Program: Emergency Disaster Preparedness

Plan of Work: Increasing Agriculture Awareness and Profitability

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to the United States Census of Ag, Hart county has doubled the amount of grain acres harvested from 2007 to 2017.  With that acreage increase has came the increase in storage facilities (grain bins) in the county as well.  What has not came is the rescue equipment required for grain bins in case of an emergency.  On March 1st 2022,  Hart County Extension, Ky Department of Ag, Hart County Emergency Management,  and the Hart County Farm Bureau Federation partnered on a grain safety program held at the Hart County Fairgrounds.  There were 35 people in attendance with a majority of those being volunteer firefighters.  Dale Dobson with the Ky Department of Ag gave a presentation on grain safety equipment as well as showed the film "Silo".  This is just the beginning of a series of programs revolving around grain safety and bringing firefighters as well as farmers together to demonstrate safe practices and emergency procedures when dealing with grain storage equipment.  All in attendance agreed that more training would be needed as well as expressed the eagerness to purchase grain rescue equipment for their departments.
