Author: Laura Maggard

Planning Unit: Lawrence County CES

Major Program: Poultry/Small Flocks

Plan of Work: Enhance the Strong Agicultural and Natural Resource Base

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Lawrence County Agriculture and Natural Resource (ANR) Extension Agent partnered with Lawrence County Farm Bureau to provide the preschool classes at Louisa West Elementary school supplies to incubate eggs. 4 classrooms were provided incubators and chicks. The ANR Agent and Farm Bureau employees went around to the classrooms to distribute supplies. The ANR agent did a lesson on how and why we incubate eggs. The chicken eggs were provided by University of Kentucky Poultry unit. Each classroom was given 12 eggs on March 8th to allow time for eggs to hatch before the schools spring break. On day 15 after eggs were placed in incubators, the ANR agent and Farm Bureau staff went and candled the eggs to make sure they are viable. Roughly 75% of the eggs were fertilized and growing. The stages of chick development were shown and discussed with the preschool classes. The students were excited for the chicks to grow and hatch and vocalized that they were excited to learn where chickens came from. The preschool class was excited on day 21 that eggs started chirping and cracking. The students enjoyed seeing the process of chick development and learning where chickens come from. The ANR Extension Agent and Farm Bureau look forward to providing more classrooms incubating equipment next spring.
