According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 24% of children ages 6 to 17 participate in 60 minutes of physical activity each day. It is important that children participate in 60 minutes of exercise every day, to stay healthy.
The Breathitt County SNAP-Ed Assistant, in partnership with the Breathitt County Public School System, taught the LEAP (Literacy, Eating, and Activity for Primary) Curriculum. During one visit with a 2nd grade class, the book, How I.Q. Gets Fit, was read to 37 students. As a part of the lesson, students tried fresh fruit, participated in several exercises, and tips on how to stay hydrated. 100% of students indicated that they would start exercising at home and at school.
