Planning Unit: Hancock County CES

Major Program: Science, Engineering, and Technology

Plan of Work: Developing Leadership, Life Skills, and Volunteer Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity's most pressing current and future challenges. The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields.  (www.nationalacademies.org)  Studies have also shown that interest in science begins to decline in Middle School. In order to address this need, Hancock County 4-H worked in collaboration with a local industry, Southwire Aluminum to purchase the National 4-H curriculum,  4-H Junk Drawer Robotics.

The Junk Drawer Robotics Club held a series of meetings with hands-on activities for youth. This club was led by a 4-H Teen Volunteer who attends high school at the Innovation Academy in a neighboring county. The program provided opportunities to explore real-life robotics challenges, work in teams, communicate, and problem solve.

The major objectives of the 4-H Junk Drawer Robotics Club were 1) develop youth's confidence and understanding of robotics 2) develop youth's problem solving skills 3) develop team building and cooperation among participants 4) expand youth's knowledge of robotics.

Youth were surveyed following the completion of the program. Results indicated:

-100% learned how to problem-solve as they completed the experiments.

-83% learned and practiced teamwork.

-100% learned to plan and design.

-100% indicated they use the SET skills and knowledge gained on a routine basis.

-100% indicated they want to pursue science and engineering classes.
