Encouraging New Gardeners

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

As a result of pandemic related issues and work from home arrangements, many of Lexingtons residents developed an interest in gardening. Subsequent ecomonic conditons have led even more people to delve into food production at home. The Fayette County Extension Office adapted by offering more fruit and vegetable topics to our programming the last two years. We often encourage people to put what they have  learned into practice by providing seeds or plants for them to plant at home afterwards. Our clients are often amazed by the advantages some of the newer improved varieties offer. We select these based on research trials and independent oragnizations like All American Selections. Many of these newer varieties are often not yet available in local nurseries. One client shared the following regarding their experiences.

"Because if the information supplied I have tried new avenues.  Figs have yet to be successful but I have enjoyed the process.  Potatoe varieties have been outstanding and have created some interesting discussions with individuals who have never tried new things. Had given up on bulbs but am looking forward to possible success this spring (grape hyacinths already through the ground). Still working on the garlic process and honing in on changes to make it more successful. Encouraging to know there is one more individual like myself who does the best they can, often gets overwhelmed and recognises that having a failure means learning occurs.  Keep up the good work it inspires us all".
