Daviess County 4-H is able to utilize schools, clubs, and camp settings to promote and support healthy lifestyle choices. At the beginning of this school year, a request came in from Owensboro High School FMD classroom to restart a nutrition program. The 4-H agent and program assistant show up once a month to teach a nutrition lesson. A short lesson is taught followed by a recipe. There are 5-8 students in each class, for a total of about 24 students.

Last month the students learned how appearance and taste can be different. The students were given three apples to judge from sight and voted for their favorite one. Next, the students were given a sample of each of the three apples (unmarked and pre-cut) and voted for their favorite one. In two of the three classes, the students’ favorite one by sight did not match their favorite one by taste. Some of the students were amazed at how the prettiest one isn’t always the tastiest one. For the recipe part of the lesson, each student was given 3 small skewers and chunks of fruit (strawberries, pineapple, grapes, and blueberries). The students had to cut their fruit into small pieces to fit onto their skewers. One student (who refused to try the recipe in January) ate every piece of fruit from their skewer. The teacher sent the mother a video of the student enjoying their fruit. The mother was completely shocked that the student ate any of the fruit as this student is an extremely picky eater.
