“Robotics Team Work”
In the past, Maupin Elementary prided themselves onimplementing technology in their curriculum and specializing as a technologycentered school. Upon a change of administrators, Maupin moved away fromintegrating technology in their curriculum and as a result their students fellbehind academically. After visiting the school and offering 4-H STEM programming, the FRYSC (Family Resource & Youth Services Coordinator) sentout a needs assessment I created to collect data on what teachers knew theirstudents needed to grow in which was technology.
Taking the data collected and aligning heir need with ourstrategic plan, Two 5th grade classes totaling in 60 students at Maupin was presented with the EV3 Curriculum. In this curriculum that was presented during the school day. Students are learning what a robot is, how to build one, and how to program it. In all our lessons I put emphasis on the importance of these three elements: teamwork, effective communication, and working diligently. This past Monday I was extremely surprised that one of my 5th grade groups implemented all of theelements and in 45 minutes, had their robot close to being complete! In thisgroup we’ve had some rough days but seeing this group learn, work together, andbe ready to help their peers really motivated me to continue to build a positiverelationship with them.
