In Kentucky, adult obesity continues to rise and impacts adults’ overall health and wellness. To help address this concern, the Spencer County Family Consumer Sciences Agent partnered with Multi-Purpose Agency in Taylorsville, Kentucky to help provide nutritional instruction to their senior citizen population. The researched-based information from the Nutrition Education Program curriculum “Healthy Choices for Every Body Reading Labels” was used. The Spencer County Family Consumer Sciences Agent taught a three-part lesson once a month for 3 months to participants. During the program participants were provided with labels from everyday food items to teach how to read a nutrition label when they are purchasing groceries. Several of the participants had never read a food label. One participant commented, "this lesson has been so helpful to me to understand where to find the serving size. Now, I understand how much to eat." An entry and exit survey were conducted at their center and participant’s completed survey data was collected. The results revealed 60% of participants improved their knowledge of reading food labels. The program was a success, and the Spencer County Family Consumer Sciences Agent will continue to partner with the Multi-Purpose Agency's senior citizen program.
