Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
Pike County Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program once again partnered with the Ladies West Care Rehabilitation group to educate clients on how to make healthier food choices and options available for physical activity.
Seven required lessons were taught using the Healthy Choices for Everybody curriculum. Clients received information on the following: how to figure out how many calories their bodies need daily; correct food portions; how to read food labels; how to find healthier alternatives to fast and pre-packaged foods; the reasons to limit fat, sugars and salt; how to make a food budget and plan meals; and how to handle and prepare food safely.
Fourteen clients ages 18 -60 entered the program with 100% graduating with great improvements as follows: 83% improved on diet quality, 85% improved on food resource management skills, 92 % improved on physical activity, and 84% improved on preparing food more safely.
One client stated, “I learned a lot about how much money I will save by pre-planning meals at home -vs- the cost of convenience foods, and also using food labels to help me with food choices has become a habit for me to read before purchasing food.” And another client stated, “I was amazed how easy it was to make a menu and a store list.”
