Plan of Work: Making Better Choices for Healthier Lifestyles

Outcome: Initial Outcome

One and two-person households are the fastest-growing segments of the population. Whether at home or dining out, eating healthy is important. This lesson encouraged participants to create and enjoy great meals at home, as well as how to choose healthy selections when eating out alone or with friends. The FCS agent taught this lesson to 15 club leaders who will share this information with their club members reaching approximately 75 across the area. The lesson promoted following MyPlate recommendations for healthier options instead of fast food.  Grocery shopping tips, and ideas for preparing healthy meals at home and safe storage practices were also shared. Participants were informed about apps that are available to assist with meal planning.

Participants were also introduced to the importance of mindful eating. Mindful eating consists of setting aside time to eat, setting the atmosphere, reflections, avoiding eating on the go; not multi-tasking, finishing chewing, and swallowing each bite. In other words, to savor the dining experience with eating at home alone or with others. For those who find themselves eating out alone, participants were told to plan in advance, watch portion sizes, condiments that add calories, ask questions, and pay close attention to how the food items are prepared when ordering. They were also taught how to be safe, dress comfortably and how dining out can be an opportunity for self-care - to treat themselves to a special outing and to enjoy their own company.

All of the participants enjoyed the lessons.  Several who rarely dine alone indicated that they were going to move from their comfort zone and treat themselves to an enjoyable dining experience.  They several shared that they planning to cook meals that could be divided up and frozen for future meals.
