From 2019, planted acres of hemp has decreased 93% in Kentucky (Kentucky Department of Agriculture) despite this significant production decline, the public still has curiosity surrounding the commodity. Recognizing this need for public education, Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Samantha Anderson, led a seminar with the West Kentucky Community and Technical College Seniors Learning for Fun group.
The presentation topics consisted of economic consideration, agronomic considerations and misconceptions, pathological concerns, and labor and equipment need, as well as a discussion on the future of the industry.
The seminar was attended by 20 individuals of varied and diverse backgrounds. Written feedback was collected at the conclusion of the seminar. Participants indicated their appreciation of the subject matter. One participant stated, “Really wasn’t interested in topic but boy! Was I surprised. Samantha was knowledgeable and personable, and this was a really good program. And informative.”
Because of this seminar, the McCracken County Cooperative Extension Service has been invited to speak in the future. Future seminar topics include raised garden management.
