Partnerships and Community Care!
Family and Consumer Sciences, Leslie County Extension helps families, individuals and community manage challenges and provide community care. Two main concerns for our county are our senior citizen population and the high rate of substance abuse. According to Kentucky by the Numbers 2019 data sheets, almost 18% of our population is 65 or over. Also, according to data from The 2019 Kentucky Extension Community Assessment Statewide Report, high rates of substance abuse are of great concern.
Early Fall 2021 we began a relationship with our local Celebrate Recovery group through a project expedited by a college student internship. Several bag to go programs were shared with this group which they enjoyed with their families! To meet goals during her internship she formed partnerships between Celebrate Recovery and other community centered organizations. Leslie County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent along with Extension staff and community volunteers partnered with Celebrate Recovery and churches delivering bags of Christmas goodies and essential items, including NEP and Health/ Oral care educational literature for 26 senior residents at The Hyden Rehabilitation Center. This leadership effort has inspired many in the community to continue giving to our senior citizens! Special thanks to partners who gave to these very special efforts!
