Major Program: Economic Development and Workforce Preparation – 4-H Youth Development
Plan of Work: Developing Human Capital
Outcome: Initial Outcome
For the past 50 years, the Allen County 4-H Youth Development Program has facilitated the American Private Enterprise Systems (APES) Program for Allen County High School students. The APES Program is designed to “prepare students for an active role in business through direct involvement with business and professional leaders … In doing so, it acquaints students with career opportunities in business and provides leadership training for those serving as officers and committee members in local, area, state, and national programs” (KY APES, 2018).
In preparation for the 50th program, eleven local community partners collaborated during the planning process to give our local program a fresh revision for improved programs in 2021. These efforts resulted in a more engaging experience for all youth, including brand new: exciting business tours, interactive speaker activities and the addition of small business meet and greets. These new additions were well received by the 27 junior participants and 3 senior leaders.
Over the course of three days, youth expanded their understanding of entrepreneurship and business through speaker sessions, business tours, applied knowledge tests, skill development activities, board presentations, networking with local business leaders and so much more. At the conclusion of the program, youth completed 8 payday quizzes and 1 jackpot exam to compete for 13 continuing education scholarships and 9 cash prizes totaling a worth of $2,560.
When asked, what youth would gain from participating in the APES program, several youth responded:
“… higher knowledge of business and how it works…”
“… how business is beneficial locally and nationally…”
“… business skills and interview/career skills…”
The Allen County’s APES Program has positively impacted more than 1,500 students over the past 50 years, instilling the importance of business knowledge, career exploration in entrepreneurship and emphasis on local businesses leadership here in our community.
