Farm-2-School Lesson Bring Awareness to Local Produce and Farmers Market

Planning Unit: Elliott County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Youth Agriculture outreach in the community

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Engaging youth in agricultural education was identified as a priority by our county stakeholders considering the strong agricultural history of the county. I responded to this need by doing 3 Farm-2-School lessons with 7 classes at Elliott County High school. The lessons focused on the benefits of local produce and where to find it in our county, a lesson on MyPlate talking about portion sizes of each food group (each student got 1 serving of fruit from the apples), and a scenario lesson that had students analyze what they would do if they were left a farm and how they would make it profitable. I made these lessons more effective by purchasing enough apples from a local farmer for all the students in each class to try. While the students were eating the apples I talked about where the local farmers market is located and informed them about the kids bucks program they can participate in get money to spend at the farmers market by participating in extension activities. They also received a fact sheet with why local produce often tastes better than what we get at the store. I had many students remark that these apples were the best they had ever had, and that the apples were better than the ones the receive in the school lunches. This taught students about delicious local produce as well as why and where to purchase it. With these lessons I was able to reach 71 students.
