Extension Assists Trail Riders Club

Author: Keith Hackworth

Planning Unit: Floyd County CES

Major Program: Economic Development

Plan of Work: Strengthening Extension and Community Leaders

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Directed by the needs’ assessment from our County Extension Council, Extension has been involved in the promotion and planning of community development and tourism events. It is of great importance to the county to bring in tourism dollars. These funds will flow throughout the community and make a larger economic impact. Extension has been working with the leadership of the Big Sandy Trail Riders Club in the planning, promotion, and conducting of their German Bridge Horse Trail Rides for several years. This event is held twice a year in the spring and fall. Each event brings in over 250 riders and numerous other visitors from the region and surrounding states. It is estimated that the tourism dollars added to the economy has an impact of $50,000 annually. These events are used to promote the area’s scenic beauty and encourage the visitors to return for other activities. Since the club also has the lease on the German Bridge Campground, Extension is assisting them with the planning and developing activities and additions to the grounds to encourage additional use of the camping facilities. Since the recent loss of the campground manager, Extension has been involved in the search for a replacement and the development of improved record keeping and job descriptions for paid and volunteer staff. The club has been very appreciative of the assistance from Extension.
