Bullitt County becomes a “Certified County.” Bullitt County was one of the eight counties in the state to become certified as a Kentucky 4-H Bee Ambassador Program “Certified County.”  This certification was received because of the efforts from  4-H Agents, Horticulture Agent and Bulitt County Beekeepers Association. Bullitt County received this certification because of combined efforts to educate youth and adults about honey bees and other pollinators, installations of bee-friendly plantings and providing resources and equipment to local beekeepers.  Over 10 youth were taught lessons to introduce them to the bee colony, basics of production and what's needed to become a beekeeper. More than 4 adults were educated about basic beekeeping, equipment needed, inspecting and treatment of the hives. The Extension Office has two demonstration hives, which are used to teach beekeepers and potential beekeepers about the hands-on management and care of hives. The office also houses two honey extractors for beekeepers use, approximately 30 individuals have utilized these items.  Several demonstrations have been provided for beekeepers and numerous plantings made for the benefit of honey bees and other pollinators.  Over ninety percent of the participants state that these efforts make them better beekeepers. In the upcoming year, we hope to expand our collaboration as a county team doing more programing using the Bee Ambassador curriculum and encourage more youth involvement.

Several of the youth members have hives at their homes. Youth built and painted hive boxes for National Beekeeper's Conference. Youth raised $500.00 for the club through the auction at the conference.
