4-H Camp is Back!

Planning Unit: Scott County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: Environmental Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The previous Lawrence County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences collaborated with the Lawrence County 4-H/ANR Assistant and the Lawrence County 4-H Summer Intern to provide the opportunity for youth to attend 4-H Summer Camp at the end of July 2021. This 4-H Camp experience was slightly different then years past, as safety measures were put into place to help insure the wellness of campers during the COVID-19 pandemic. After a year of uncertainty it was important for 4-H Camp to be a time and place where youth felt safe.

Lawrence County had 37 individuals participate in camp this past July, including 5 adult volunteers. While this number is much smaller than the average number of participants in years past, the number of participants allowed for health safety guidelines to be followed while at 4-H camp.

Campers were able to participate in many activities including swimming, nature walks, crafting, sports, archer, ropes, and more! Through these activities, youth were able to build confidence in new skills, develop community, and demonstrate their ability to lead in groups and as individuals. Each child was given the opportunity to try each class and leadership experience that camp had to offer. One of the best parts of camp this past summer was watching the youth being able to have community and socializations with their peers (many of whom had not seen each other in months).

One participant said she had the, “best week ever!” Even with many necessary changes, one thing did not change this summer and that was the “4-H Camp Magic.” “4-H Camp Magic” being that almost indescribable feeling of belonging and confidence camp provides youth and even adult volunteers. Looking towards the future, all Agents with 4-H responsibilities will continue to support the 4-H youth through the 4-H camping program for years to come.
