Combining community service with communications and a natural resource lesson was a great collaborative event. The Family Ties Resource Director from the primary school called and asked if I would be willing to help with a project that her kindergarten and first grade leadership club was wanting to do. They wanted to make bird feeders for an assisted living facility here in Carroll County. I said I would love to do a lesson on birds and then supply bird feeder kits for the children to put together. She said that the president of the club would be calling me to ask if I would be willing to do this project and she wanted to know that I would before he called so that he would not be disappointed. The young man called and introduced himself, explained the project and asked if I would be willing to help with the leadership’s club community service project. When I told him that project is a great idea and thanks for asking me to be involved in the project, he got so excited on the phone and yelled out “She said Yes”. He said that there are 9 members in the club, so I ordered the neatest bird feeders (that was for preschoolers and just snapped together) and called on my volunteers to see if they were available after school to go with me to the classroom. I had four volunteers who instructed the children on how to assemble the feeders together. The children were so proud when they delivered the feeders to the assisted living facility, and they just knew that the residents would love watching the birds and realize the importance of feeding the birds especially in the winter months. Accomplishments:
The project is now completed.
