Plan of Work: Strengthen Community, Leadership and Economic Development in Harlan County

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Kentucky 4-H delegates selected to National 4-H Congress must first earn the 4-H Gold Achievement Award.  This is no easy task and takes years for some 4-Hers to achieve.  During the past eight years Harlan County has had 5 delegates achieve Gold and attend Congress. National 4-H Congress is a five-day Educational Experience held in Atlanta, Ga.  Congress is the premiere nation-wide event for members to network with other 4-Hers from around the country, Canada, and Puerto Rico.  While attending Congress this past November, the Harlan County delegate engaged in leadership, citizenship, global awareness, and inclusion with Harlan County Agent as chaperone. Both attended educational workshops, explored the city with trips to museums and theaters and broaden their appreciation for the arts and many historical events in American. They attended state and Congress wide meetings, attended a night of international dinner, and participated in community service in downtown Atlanta to give back and experience what it feels like to have a positive impact on a community. They visited the aquarium and listened to world-renowned speakers such as Miss America, and a holocaust survivor. This experience gave the delegates the opportunity to expand their knowledge about the world, the United States, and network with others from across the country.  They gained many new connections that will last a lifetime. This year's delegate was re-acquainted with a fellow Governor's Scholar from the past summer. The agent served on the facilities committee this year and has served on others in the past.
