Identity theft is the most reported type of fraud complaint that the Federal Trade Commission and other enforcement agencies receive. It comes in many forms, but basically it happens when someone steals your personal information to impersonate you for the thief’s gain. Identity theft can happen in-person or online. With identity theft occurring so frequently, it is important to take steps to reduce risk.

To increase consumer knowledge on identity theft and fraud prevention, the Jefferson County Extension Office hosted a workshop for the Louisville Area Extension Homemakers titled “Reducing the Risk of Identity Theft” in September, 2021. Evaluations placed educational emphasis on three things:

1. Understanding identity theft,
2. Knowing three ways to protect yourself from identity theft, and
3. Listing steps to resolving identity theft if it happens.

At least 24 consumers participated in the workshop. Following the class, 100% of respondents indicated they were able to understand identity theft; 96% knew three ways to protect themselves from identity theft; and 96% can list steps to resolving identity theft if it happens. 

Of those who responded, 100% indicated they plan to shred documents they no longer need and take other steps to keep personal information private. In addition, 98% of respondents plan to monitor account statements regularly for unusual activity, and 96% plan to check their credit reports annually.

As a result of the program, one participant noted “Don not answer simple questions-they give identity thieves more information than we realize. Be more aware and cautious.” Others plan to: Keep checking all my bank accounts and credit card statements. Take personal information off Face Book. Watch emails and calls no matter where you think they come from. Be careful in sharing any information.
