On December 10 2021, West KY was struck by may be the most devastating tornado Kentucky has ever seen. Communities from Warren County to Fulton County were impacted with the center of the storm passing through Mayfield along with Princeton, Dawson Springs, and Bremen Kentucky. These last three cities mentioned all belong to the Pennyrile Area. The Pennyrile Area Teen Council is a group of 4- H’ers who meet monthly to practice leadership, citizenship, and community service. At the December meeting of 2021 this group of youth representing 7 counties that night, collected funds in an effort to help those who were affected by the storm. PATC, comprised of eighth-graders through seniors, collected over $1,000 in their efforts. This group then took the funds to Walmart where they split into groups and shopped for a 4-H’er who had lost her home in the storm. The PATC youth had a self-lead debriefing before they went shopping on what the storm meant to them. One youth said “I have a newfound respect for firemen and all E.M.S. workers. They have been helping my town non-stop since Friday night.” Another person said, “My father is a linemen, he worked 30 hours straight.” PATC will continue to meet monthly and I have no doubt the leaders of tomorrow, will come from this group.
