Plan of Work: Livestock & Crops

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

During the 2019 CAIP program, two producers installed fenceline feeder systems. One installed the system just prior to hay usage for the winter of 2019-2020. According to that producer, he was saving somewhere between $1,800 - $2,100 in hay by utilizing the feeding system. In June 2021, a follow-up field day was held on this farm to demonstrate the use of a fenceline feeder system with numbers to back up the operation. Prior to the 2019-2020 hay feeding season, the producer was feeding 399 rolls of hay to 56 head of cattle using a Hay Mizer Feeder, rotational grazing and no grain. Beginning in the 2019-2020 season, the producer began feeding in the one fenceline feeder system and fed 208 rolls of hay to 62 head of cattle along with some grain and rotational grazing. In 2020-2021, two fenceline feeders were utilized and the producer fed 180 rolls of hay to 61 head of cattle along with grain and rotational grazing. Within three feeding seasons, the producer is saving 219 rolls of hay by utilizing a mixture of fenceline feeders, supplementing some grain, and rotationally grazing.
