Enhanced Farmer's Market Opportunities

Author: Robert Amburgey

Planning Unit: Bath County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Improved Management and Profitability

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Bath County Extension ag program worked with the extension district board and the Farmer's market executive committee to develop an opportunity to extend the marketing season for locally grown and locally produced products.  The district board agreed to provide the market pavilion to the farmer's market from October to December to allow local producers and artisans the opportunity to sell their products inside through the holiday season.  The extended indoor market not only improved marketing for growers, but also encouraged artisans and value added producers to be more active in the farmer's market and with the extension office.  We are now in our 3rd season and through these efforts, the farmer's market has increased local participation by 12 new producers and added a number of value added products to the market which has also brought in a new customer base.  In talking with the board members, they have stated that local market sales have increased over 30% over the last three years.  Cooperation between ag groups, the district board and extension has shown how a more diversified product offering and being able to extend the season is beneficial to our local producers and can add to farm profitability.
