Plan of Work: Developing Leadership, Citizenship, Health, & Life Skills Among Youth

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Substance abuse and addiction plague our community and its members. For several years, efforts have been increased to bring awareness to and help prevent drug addiction in our community. Last year, the Wolfe County Extension Office implemented Recovery Week, a week to celebrate those who are in recovery and bring hope to those hoping to enter recovery. The week is kicked off on Monday night with Yoga, which is an activity commonly used to help aid in a recovering persons journey. Tuesday a town hall was held for the community to express concerns and learn about activities and programs that are occurring. On Wednesday we held recovery celebration with a group from Chad's Hope who spoke to share testimonials. For Thursday an organized trash clean up for community members and specialty court members to clean up our community physically while we also intend on cleaning up the drug issues. Friday - Saturday we held our virtual 5K walk to bring awareness to the community and show a stand of support. In addition this year we held an in person run! The group ran on a trail around town to show support for those recovering. Throughout the week we had participation from 300 people. The week left people empowered to join a committee or work group in our community, improved outlook for those who are entering recovering to reach out for help and understand the resources available to assist those fighting the battle. While we do not have data that anyone was led to enter recovery from the week, we are hopeful we made a impact on someone's life and hope to hear during recovery week next year that they were led to get help from this week alone.
