According to the 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation of Kentucky Survey, there are 554,000 anglers in the state of Kentucky, and anglers add over $800 million into Kentucky’s economy. With this information, the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife started working with the University of Kentucky Extension Agents to help in the recruiting process and education of new and experienced anglers. In the summer of 2021, the Henry County Extension Office asked the KY Fish and Wildlife to partner together in hosting multiple Hook and Cook Programs. Two Hook and Cook programs were planned: one being for adults and one for youth. During these programs, participants learned the basics of fishing from equipment to baits, how to clean fish, cook their catch, and how to fish. The adult class had 5 participants who were completely new to fishing. The youth class had over 13 participants from ages 9 to 15 years old. Many of the adults were new anglers and stated that they were able to catch their first fish, and also stated that they were planning more future fishing trips. Most of the youth had fishing experience, but many cleaned their first fish during this course. Also from the youth class, many participants stated how they would like to have a 4-H fishing club, and over ten participants were at the first 4-H fishing Club in Henry County.
