Outcome: Initial Outcome
Members of the home owners association near Lochmere Pond, Lexington, KY, requested educated opinions from Kentucky State University concerning a diminishing pond on the property. John Kelso, Extension/Research Assistant visited this property in June 2021 to determine the best course of action. During a meeting with members of the community including Dr, Aaron Thompson it was presented that the condition of the pond was in need of repairs for any significant change in land use. Willows, cattail, and marsh plants covered 75% of the pond and were consuming most of the water through the year. Opinions of the extension professional, literature provided, and contacts shared during the meeting provided the owners with a few options to restore their pond. Since, the first meeting, contractors were employed to begin removing willows and cattails, opening the pond banks for the neighborhood to enjoy. Approximately, 50% of the suggested work has been completed. It is expected that by the end of this story the neighborhood will have utilized the extension service to increase the value of this property and promote a safe aquatic environment to be enjoyed by the residents and wildlife.
