4-H Country Ham Project

Author: Annette Buckman

Planning Unit: Union County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Beef Production, Marketing, and Other Animal Sciences

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In 2021, the Union County 4-H Country Ham project had 13 youth.  The program was brought back to Union County with the help of Meacham Hams volunteering time and service to this valuable project. Due to Covid, only 5 participants were able to participate at the State Fair.  Ryan Thomas from Union County had the overall winning ham for State.  This was a great accomplishment for Union County.  For 2022, we have 11 participants.  Each participant enters their ham in the County Fair and are given the opportunity to give their speech.  The Union County Country Ham Breakfast and Auction is held the last day of the fair. This event is sponsored by Union County Kentucky Farm Bureau.  This is the first time since 2019 that the annual breakfast was held.  We had around 75 people to attend with several elected officials.  The Country Ham Auction is the grand finale raising money for the State Fair trip.  This year we had 4 Auction hams raising $1175 with one donation of $200 making a grand total of $1375.

The Union County 4-H Country Ham Project has been a long standing successful program with dedicated youth participating each year.
