Author: Adam Leonberger

Planning Unit: Franklin County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Strengthening Knowledge and Awareness of Agriculture and Horticulture in Franklin County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Gardening provides a number of health benefits including, mental health management and anxiety reduction. As a result, many individuals are interested in expanding their knowledge and skills related to home gardening. As a way to provide a variety of educational opportunities on the various aspects of gardening, Extension partnered with Extension Master Gardener volunteers to create a series of hands-on and classroom programs. Master Gardner volunteers have a diverse set of skills and experiences which can be utilized to provide programs that are applicable and relatable to the general public. Extension personnel met regularly with program leaders and offered guidance, resources, and ensured accuracy of program information. Programs were provided in-person and virtually to allow improved access.

During Fall 2021 to Spring 2022 a total of 13 programs on topics such as harvesting seeds, drystone fences, landscape design, and container gardens were provided. In-person participation varied from 4 to 17. Virtual options extended the reach of these programs to an additional 18 to 40 individuals.
