Leadership and Communications

Major Program: Leadership 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Leadership Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Leadership is developed by having opportunities to lead.  Six schools have provided such opportunities by enrolling their 7th and 8th grade teens in the 4-H character ed program called "Talking with TJ".  These teens are trained in teams to deliver the conflict resolution themed messages to 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th graders in their schools.  Each team will work with their assigned classroom of younger students for at least six hours providing hands-on activities, thought provoking videos, and conducting discussions in identifying both "trouble starters" and "trouble stoppers".  The teens are conducting the sessions, leading the younger students, and practicing good communication skills.  They are also challenged to model good behavior in and around schools and community as they 'practice what they preach'.  The potential for impact is substantial as there are now 76 young teens in 22 teams who are working with 485 younger students in learning to be more tolerant, more empathic, and more responsible for their own actions.
