Farmers Learn Strategies for Addressing Emerging Armyworm Threat

Author: Brian Jeffiers

Planning Unit: Johnson County CES

Major Program: Forages

Plan of Work: Livestock and Crops

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The 2021 outbreak of fall armyworms has proven to be a disastrous event for forage production. Hay and pasture fields can be destroyed in just a few days, leaving farmers without much-needed nutrition at such a late point in the season that replenishment is impossible. Leaders of the Highlands Beef Cattle Association identified the armyworm issue as their priority for the September meeting of the group.

A total of 42 producers attended to hear agent presentations on identifying, treating, and recovering from the fall armyworm. Area producers also reported on their recent experiences with armyworms. All in attendance reported gaining knowledge about armyworms. Another 380 people viewed infographics and other educational items on the Johnson County Ag Extension page on Facebook. One local producer who could not attend also consulted directly with the ANR agent to confirm his suspicions of an outbreak at his farm and to get information on his options going forward.
