It has long been known that permanent Farmers’ Market structures serve as a catalyst for community and economic development. A permanent facility creates opportunity for a solid market that, in turn, grows a strong customer base. In most cases, a facility increases vendors and vendor income, which is obviously crucial for farmers and their businesses, while also providing consumers with greater access to fresh, local produce. The economic benefits of farmers’ markets also extend to the surrounding business community and have been known to revitalize the communities in which they are built.
When the Magoffin County Extension District Board began discussing the construction of a permanent facility for the Magoffin County Farmers' Market in 2018, the ANR agent worked diligently to see it to fruition. The agent's efforts included writing two substantial grants, both of which were approved for a grand total of $260,387.50 in funds, and enabled the board to turn a dream into reality.
After hurdling many obstacles, the board hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 6th, during National Farmers' Market Week, with the support of State Representative, John Blanton, KOAP Executive Director, Brian Lacefield, and several community leaders and UK CES administrators.
This project has great potential to increase sales and foot traffic at the market in the coming years. This new, visible market will provide an outlet for business for many individuals in the community, as many new farmers and home gardeners are already seeking assistance with expanding small gardens in order to sell excess produce at the market, as well as inquiring about becoming a market member and completing the training to be able to accept WIC and Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program vouchers in 2022.
The Magoffin County Extension District Board is eager for the county to see the long-term impact this facility will have in the community.
UK President, Dr. Eli Capilouto, visited the market on July 16th and was impressed with the quality of produce and baked goods, and was thrilled to meet and talk with the agent and vendors.
