Livestock projects provide youth with a plethora of life skills. However, not all youth have access to requirements necessary for larger meat/market animal projects. I was approached in 2020 by the Germantown Fair Board regarding a rabbit and poultry show where youth could exhibit their projects. Knowing nothing about either projects I enlisted the assistance of surrounding county agents and program assistants.
Due to the fact the idea of a rabbit and poultry show/club was born during the pandemic virtual meetings were the only option. During our virtual club meetings that had members from 3 counties, we covered body parts, breeds, and show techniques of both rabbits and poultry.
Our last meeting before the fair was finally able to meet in person. At this meeting we have a club leader from a neighboring county come and teach us what actually occurs during a rabbit and poultry show. Finally the day had come for the show at the county fair. For the first ever rabbit and poultry show at Germantown Fair we had 15 exhibitors and over 30 entries. With the new 4-H year starting we are hoping to have a bigger club and larger show!
