Middle School Leadership

Planning Unit: 4-H Central Operations

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: Basic Life Skills for Youth and Adults in Scott County

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The after school middle school program started in 2019 with a full classroom of middle school youth looking for an after school program that was not a sport. We continue to see strong attendance numbers in the after school program and have made plans for the new program year. We are looking to incorporate more opportunities for increasing  communication skills though the 4-H communication program, as well as focus more on service learning by having the group help clean or make small improvements to the school. There will be two meetings a month, one business/lesson meeting and then one focused solely on the service project. The club will also be rotating through the officer positions every other month so that all youth will hold a leadership position at least once though out the year. As a group we will also participate in any district or state level middle school program opportunity. The success of this program has reach one other middle school in Scott County and there is hope that soon there will be a after school program added to this other school. The hope then will be to have a combined middle school group that would meet at the office to allow members from each school, private school members, and homeschool members to join in as well. Middle school youth are an important age for the 4-H program. We have to make the connection now so that there is a greater chance that they will continue in high school and further their 4-H career.
