Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Even though Allen County, KY. was having some of the Covid-19 restrictions lifted. Senior Citizens were still not getting out and shopping for themselves due to being at high risk.

This project served low-income seniors in Allen County, where the poverty rate is 19.1%. The goal of this project was to increase the fresh produce intake of the senior citizens in Allen County. 28 Allen County Scottsville High School students participated in the program by going to Need More Acres farm during the week and on weekends. To plant, care for and harvest fresh produce. They plant the vegetables from seed and raised the vegetables until they were mature enough to eat. The high school students harvested the vegetables and put them in    boxes for delivery to Allen County Senior Citizens. The high School students gain knowledge of how important farming is for agriculture, nutritious eating and gained the knowledge of how to grow, harvest and prepare or preserve the food.

The Allen County Cooperative Extension Service, Need More Acres Farm, Scottsville Senior Center, Briarwood Senior Living and Allen County Scottsville High School Patriot Providence 21st Century Community Learning Center, Ft. Run Senior Center partnered to distribute vegetables to 100 Senior Citizens of Scottsville. The boxes included 2% milk, wheat bread, brown rice, acorn squash, apple, onion, fresh eggs, lettuce and a Healthy Choices recipe. With the recipe the senior citizen would be able to make a healthy dish. The Allen County Cooperative Extension Service made the contacts, went to Need More Acres Farm on the 3rd Monday of the month and picked up the 100 boxes of food and delivered them to the senior citizens in Allen County.  In July, August, September there were 100 Senior Citizens that received fresh produce as a result of this program. Because this program was so successful with much community support, funding was obtained to support the program for 3 months. One senior citizen commented that by receiving these boxes, she felt like the community hadn’t forgotten her during this pandemic.
