Even though Allen County, KY. was having some of the Covid-19 restrictions lifted. Senior Citizens were still not getting out and shopping for themselves due to being at high risk.
This project served low-income seniors in Allen County, where the poverty rate is 19.1%. The goal of this project was to increase the vegetable intake of the senior citizens in Allen County. 28 Allen County Scottsville High School students participated in the program by going to the farm (Need More Acres) during the week and on weekends. To plant, care for and harvest vegetables. They plant the vegetables from seed and raised the vegetables until they were mature enough to eat. The high school students harvested the vegetables and put them in boxes for delivery to Allen County Seniors. The high School students gain knowledge of how important farming is for agriculture, nutritious eating and gained the knowledge of how to grow, harvest and prepare or preserve the food.
The Allen County Cooperative Extension Service, Need More Acres Farm, Scottsville Senior Center, Briarwood Senior Living and Allen County Scottsville High School Patriot Providence 21st Century Community Learning Center partnered to distribute vegetables to the Senior Citizens of Scottsville. The Allen County Cooperative Extension Service made the contacts, went to Need More Acres Farm and picked up the boxes for food and delivered 100 boxes to the senior citizen in Allen County. There were 100 Senior Citizens that received fresh produce as a result of this program. Because this program was so successful with much community support, we have received financial support to offer the program again in July, August, September of 2021
