Part of a strong vibrant welcoming downtown is landscaping and art beautification for folks to feel a welcoming vibe when visiting a city.  In spring of 2020 the Appalachian Artisan Center in downtown Hindman contacted that Knott County Extension Agent for Agriculture/Natural Resources, to help with an urban garden design, resources, and garden expertise.  The vision was to add to our current Mail Horse art feature downtown to add signage, flowers, and garden space to intensifying and attract folks to view the history of the last USPS mail horse delivery in the United States. As the committee met for the project, designs and a budget was developed and the Appalachian Artisan Center applied for an E. O. Robinson center grant which was granted in late summer of 2020.  The planning then turned into reality in the spring of 2021 with other partners including the Hindman Settlement School, Knott County Drug Court, and Hickory Hill Recovery Center to begin work on the project.  The Knott County Agriculture/Natural Resource Agent assisted with management of the project with volunteers and now have created a beautiful garden that has helped beautify an area in Hindman.  We hope this area serves as a welcoming site, a historic landmark, and look forward to community garden space for the city for several years.
