Plan of Work: Encourage and Promote Sustainable Agriculture Practices

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

In 2013 a local cattle farmer contacted the Madison County Horticulture Agent and told her he would like to start an apple orchard. The Agent invited the University of Kentucky Fruit Specialist, Dr. John Strang, to make a site visit and discuss the project with the client.

Tree fruit are difficult to grow here in Kentucky due to our climate which increases the likelihood of diseases and insects which attack the trees. These issues can drastically reduce fruit yield by effecting the health of the tree and may even lead to tree death. That makes variety selection and disease, pest and cultural practices very important. The Specialist and Agent went over these topics with the client. Other topics covered included:

  1. Soil and foliar testing
  2. Fertilizer recommendations
  3. Pruning demonstrations
  4. Where to purchase trees and supplies
  5. Animal control
  6. Information on how to join fruit grower’s groups in the state

The Specialist and Agent did follow up visits with farmer before and after the trees were planted.

The client planted eight different varieties for a total of 850 trees.

This year he sold apples from his home and has contracted with the local school system to provide apples to their cafeterias. His apples are also sold in the local Save-A-Lot store.
