Senior Center Pandemic Closure Sparks New Partnership
Author: Emily Matthews
Planning Unit: Barren County CES
Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General
Outcome: Initial Outcome
According to the Center for Disease Control, only 8.0% of Kentuckians surveyed were consuming recommended fruit intake, while only 6.3% were consuming the recommended vegetable intake. The Barren County SNAP-Ed (Supplemental Nutrition Education Program Education) Assistant partnered with Community Action of Southern Kentucky’s Glasgow Senior Center location to help with meal distribution. The partnership allowed the Barren County SNAP-Ed Program Assistant and the newly hired Senior Center director to develop a working relationship to benefit the participating seniors. The Nutrition Education Program assistant provided Kentucky Nutrition Education Materials to the 14 participating seniors picking up meals during the COVID Senior Center Closure. The materials were also distributed to the 22 seniors that received meal deliveries. To help encourage more fruit and vegetable intake the Barren County NEP assistant was able to begin Healthy Choices for Every Body programming briefly before their second closure. During the closures, materials selected for distribution were resources from planeatmove.com, Seasoned Magazine, KYNEP recipe cards, Healthy Choices for Healthy Family Newsletters, and other KYNEP resources that provided information on nutritious eating habits.
