Planning Unit: Extension Field Programs

Major Program: Local Food Systems

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Invited to do a Grape Propagation extension demonstration for Mrs. Sharla Gross Teacher/Educator at UK Fayette Co. Family Care Center's non-traditional biology class for young mothers.  The class went well with all the young ladies participating and interested in learning about the health benefits of grapes, recipes with grapes and starting their very own grape vine to grow at home.  KSU provided the recycled pots, soil and concord grape cuttings from the KSU extension and demonstration vineyard and grateful for the help and support from KSU extension co-workers Decari Carrington and KevinGurtowski, along with Jann Knappage, U.K. Food System Specialist.  These extension demonstrations and outreach began with this group coming to the KSU Farm in 2017 for an agriculture and horticultural tour led by me.  This group is wanting to do more of these extension demonstrations including scheduling more trips in 2018 to the farm for activities including fruit and vegetable harvesting and processing demonstrations using the Fruit and Vegetable trailer working with our extension staff.  Mrs. Gross is also working with me on scheduling more extension demonstrations with them on the care and growth of grape vines.
