Whitley County Stream Team

Author: Lisa Jones

Planning Unit: Whitley County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Youth, Adults, & Families

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Beginning in the summer of 2021, 4-H members met at the Ballard Ford River Access to learn about the watershed we live in. Youth participated in studies that consisted of conducting chemical testing, collecting and identifying macroinvertebrates (aquatic insects), and stream studies. Using the Kentucky Water Health Portal, we identified the streams in our county, collect stream samples and reported the data to the Watershed Watch website.

We prepared over 3,000 project packs that were distributed from three different sites. Project packs have been a great way to reach new individuals in Whitley County. 100% of the participants of the projects would like to participate in more 4-H projects. One of our projects was to make a home terrarium out of recycled materials, included was curriculum instructions, soil, seeds and recycled bottles. Youth learned about the water cycle and how materials can be reused for another purposes. Along with learning about the water cycle, they learned about watersheds and grew beautiful flowers in their terrariums. Project packs ranged from natural resources, environment, wildlife, water, pollinators, food & nutrition, and much more.
