The Kenton County Annual Farm Tour seeks to connect the urban and rural residents with learning where their food comes from. It is important for farmers to work on educating the public about who they are, what they do, and why it matters. 98 percent of the population is removed from modern agriculture, so connecting to consumers is important. This educational activity provides the public an opportunity to see what happens on the farm, ask questions, and develop trust in farmers and the food produced.
The KSU Area Agent working with the KSU State Specialist was able to have “Bessie” the fife-size dairy cow on display for youth as well as adults to simulate” ‘milking”. a cow. Questions on what do they eat? how much milk is produced, and water needed to survive were answered. Reinforcements were handed out of a dairy cow coloring page and puzzle along with crayons and stickers to the youth. The verbal feedback from participants was positive with many squeals of delight from youth and adults. There were 50 participants.
The display on COVID sought to address one of the objectives of the grant to promote vaccine acceptance and access. The display reached 35 individuals featuring information on how the vaccines work, information on where to obtain a vaccine, and the proper way to wear a mask.
