The Kentucky Apple Festival has been a county tradition in excess of 50 years. Due to high Covid outbreaks, the Apple Board postponed the event until 2022. Schools began planning events within their schools instead. FCS was requested to come to one school and deliver something on apples to the entire schools, one classroom at a time- with classes being held in the gym. The FCS agent prepared a program that covered the history, the anatomy, the cultural background and the nutrient content of apples and how they fit into the human diet. The following was achieved: 90% of the 287 who participated increased their knowledge and understanding of MyPlate and where the apple fit; 92% indicated a greater understanding for the need to wash their hands before eating and preparing food: 85% indicated an increase interest in eating apples; 90% began recognizing vitamins and minerals and the whole concept of the six major nutrients. All students and adults participating became more aware of the nutrients being invisible necessities for the human well being. 50% began recognizing the method of drying, canning and freezing as a food preservation method and how these methods have been used for thousands of years and others only in the past 100 years or so. The majority indicated a greater understanding of the apple, the value of fruit in general, the importance of including fruit in their diet as well as the importance of clean hands during eating and food preparation. Most indicated an interest in including them in their diets following the program.
